The agency first announced that air traffic control had lost contact with the plane. A short while later, it was confirmed that 15 people had died in the accident, which occurred near the border with Venezuela.
The plane, which belonged to the state-owned airline Satena, took off from the border city of Cúcuta and contact with it was lost shortly before it was due to land in the city of Ocaña.
No one on board is said to have survived the crash.
