Despite being heavy favourites, it took Colombia 40 minutes to break the deadlock. Crystal Palace player Daniel Muñoz headed home the 1-0 goal with his back to goal after a fine cross from Luis Díaz.
Abbosbek Fajzullayev equalized at 1–1 after halftime and scored Uzbekistan's first-ever World Cup goal.
But Díaz then came alive. Barely five minutes later, the star striker curled in a shot on a counterattack to make it 2-1. After that, Uzbekistan - led by Italian centre-back icon Fabio Cannavaro - couldn’t recover.
In extra time, Jaminton Campaz extended the lead to 3–1.
