The Egyptian Football Association filed a formal complaint with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) after Egypt's exit from the World Cup in the round of 16 when a goal was disallowed.
Maybe they wanted to keep the reigning world champions in the tournament, said national team captain Hossam Hassan, among others.
The incident has now prompted a sharp reaction from FIFA.
"No one can question the integrity of the referees in the World Cup. When this happens, it can provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is unacceptable," said refereeing chief Collina in a statement, defending the decisions in the match.
