Already in the fourth minute, Chelsea took the lead through Romeo Lavia, and 10 minutes later Pedro Neto extended the lead to 2-0. With half an hour played, João Pedro made it 3-0.

Minutes after the third goal, Brighton's Malick Yalcouye reduced the deficit. Another goal came just 20 minutes into the second half when a shot went through João Pedro and into the net.

With 15 minutes left to play, Cole Palmer made it 4-2 after a dribbling run. The 24-year-old scored in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel, after being named by Tuchel to England's World Cup squad in the summer.

Palmer also contributed a goal and an assist in Chelsea's opening match against Fulham (3-2).

Brighton reduced the deficit in stoppage time, but that was the last action in the match, which ended 4-3.
