Six infants have frozen to death in Gaza Strip over the past week, according to the civil defense in the Hamas-ruled area. Five of them were one month old or younger.

The deaths are explained by the severe cold in combination with a widespread lack of heating in war-torn Gaza. Several more people are being treated for hypothermia, according to doctors.

A cold front that has swept in over the eastern Mediterranean in recent days has brought the temperature down to freezing point.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are still living in tents and temporary, substandard housing, despite more emergency aid arriving in Gaza following the ongoing ceasefire. Many are living in the ruins of their bombed-out homes with few ways to protect themselves from the cold.

According to Gaza's health department, a total of 15 people have died from hypothermia, i.e. severe cooling, so far during the winter months.

Terror-listed Hamas accuses Israel of blocking the import of humanitarian aid and urges mediators to demand increased aid deliveries.

"It is vital to be able to protect Gaza's children", the Palestinian extremist group announces.
