After two hours and 38 minutes, tennis world number two Coco Gauff, 21, fell to the ground on the clay of Roland Garros and covered her face with her hands.

After being defeated in the final of the French Championships 2022 as an 18-year-old by the Pole Iga Swiatek, Gauff is now a champion in Paris.

I didn't believe it

I went through a lot when I lost here last time. I honestly didn't think I would make it. I think I lied to myself when I said I would definitely make it, says the 21-year-old in her post-match interview in Eurosport's broadcast.

Via 6–7 (5–7), 6–2, 6–4, Gauff took her second grand slam title in her career after winning the US Open 2023.

The crowd really helped me. I don't know what I've done to deserve so much love from the French crowd, she says.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka was frustrated during the final. She had 70 so-called unforced errors, her own mistakes, during the match.

This hurts even more considering how well I've played tennis here over the past two weeks, says a crying Sabalenka after the loss.

She had the former clay queen Iga Swiatek – who has won in Paris four of the past five years – abdicate from the throne in the semifinals.

But in the final match, it was the fine play that was blown away.

Thanks to my team, I apologize for this terrible final, says Sabalenka, who has won three grand slam titles in her career.

Broke many serves

It was difficult wind conditions on the classic clay court. Both players acted nervously and the first set became a crazy drama. The players only held two serve games each and after 78 minutes, Sabalenka could take the set via 7–5 in the tiebreak.

However, it was Gauff who kept calm while Sabalenka lost her temper several times. The American won the second set with 6–2 and then served the title via 6–4 in the third.
