Gauff requested a video review in the round of 16 after noticing that the LED lights were flickering. The referee ordered the point to be replayed, prompting boos from the crowd. The American later won the match 7–5, 6–1.

"I followed the rules and I get hate. It's weird. You can have a different opinion about what happened without being racist towards me," Gauff writes on X.

She says the number of racist comments and messages she received in just a few hours after the match was "absolutely insane."

Gauff is ranked fourth in the world and won the China Open in 2024.
