Coco Gauff did not ripen the banana in the beginning of the match against 49-ranked Donna Vekic. But after a fine second set, the world three is clear for the third round in US Open. In the victory interview, the 21-year-old cried. It has been tough weeks for me, she says.

It required a tiebreak for Gauff to take home the first set. The American had again problems with the serve and was noticeably frustrated.

The 29-year-old Vekic pressured Gauff for over an hour before the American, despite seven double faults, could take home the set with 7–6 (7–5).

The serve has been a recurring problem for Gauff, who recently changed coaches to get the whole thing sorted out.

The tough start seemed to wake up the home favorite who strolled home the second set in just over half an hour with 6–2.

After the match, it was an emotional Gauff who thanked the audience. She described the match as tough.

I am satisfied with how I handled it. It has been tough weeks for me, she says.
