The death was announced by his company, Turner Enterprises, CNN reports.
Turner was a pioneer in his genre. When he launched CNN in 1980, it became the first 24-hour channel focused solely on news.
In addition to his role in the American media landscape, Ted Turner was involved in charity work. In 1998, he founded the United Nations Foundation, a charitable organization that supports the United Nations.
Ahead of his 80th birthday in 2018, Turner revealed he was suffering from Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disease.
He leaves behind five children, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, according to CNN.
