According to Washington, Ovechkin was asked to take part in the campaign video over the summer, which he spent in his homeland.
"Alex Ovechkin is a Russian citizen who lives in Russia with his family during the off-season, and will live there after his career," a club spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.
The spokesperson added that the club's and Ovechkin's focus is on the upcoming season.
