The Republican-led House Oversight Committee had called Democratic former President Bill Clinton to testify by Tuesday morning and Hillary Clinton, former Democratic Secretary of State, to testify on Wednesday.
But in a several-page letter to committee chairman James Comer, which American media have seen, the couple wrote that they would not attend.
"It is up to each person to decide when they have had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, regardless of the consequences," they wrote, adding: "For us, the time has come."
After Bill Clinton failed to show up on Tuesday morning, James Comer is now threatening to file a contempt of Congress lawsuit against him next week, NBC News reports.
The committee is investigating the case of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Bill Clinton has appeared in several documents and images related to the authorities' investigation into Epstein that have been released so far.
His spokesperson has stated that Clinton was unaware of Epstein's crimes and that Clinton had ended his relationship with Epstein when the crimes came to light.
According to critics, Comer and the House Oversight Committee have focused on prominent Democrats to shift attention away from President Donald Trump's connections to Epstein.
