It is clear with the organizers for the Winter OS 2030 and 2034.

The French Alps will get the games in 2030 – provided that the country's future government can give financial guarantees.

American Salt Lake City is awarded the OS 2034 – under the condition that the international anti-doping organization Wada's work is respected.

In November, it became clear that the IOC gives a thumbs down to Sweden's application to arrange the Winter OS and Paralympics 2030.

The IOC chose to move forward with only France's bid for OS 2030. One of the reasons was that France's candidacy had strong support from both the public and the government, according to the IOC.

Now it is precisely the uncertainty surrounding the government's support that makes the IOC award the French Alps the OS 2030 under the condition that France can provide guarantees for financing.

Requires financial guarantees

The country held elections in early July, but the largest bloc in parliament has not yet been able to agree on a candidate for the post of prime minister. President Emmanuel Macron has, however, stated to the IOC that he will ask the country's future prime minister to provide financial "guarantees" for arranging the OS 2030.

France's outgoing prime minister Gabriel Attal is expected to remain in office at least until after the summer OS in Paris – which opens on Friday – to give more time for government negotiations.

In November, it also became clear that American Salt Lake City will be the only candidate for the Winter OS 2034, and on Wednesday, the news came that the city, as expected, will be the organizer.

But even for Salt Lake City, the IOC came with a condition. The international anti-doping organization Wada's work must be respected, and the organization must be seen as the highest authority in doping issues.

Controversy between Wada and Usada

The background to the IOC's condition is a controversy between Wada and the American anti-doping organization Usada. It concerns Wada's handling of the case with 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for doping in early 2021. The swimmers were, however, allowed to continue competing and were later acquitted after reports that their food had been contaminated with the heart medication trimetazidine.

Thirteen of them later participated in the OS in Tokyo 2021 and won, among other things, three gold medals.

Salt Lake City arranged the Winter OS 2002. France has arranged the Winter OS three times before: in Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968, and in Albertville 1992.

Corrected: In an earlier version, the wrong month was stated for the French election.
