According to Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna, a museum building at the foot of the statue was damaged. The 102-meter-high statue was erected in 1981 as a monument to those who fell in World War II and is a well-known symbol of Kyiv.
"Symbolic and cynical at the same time: the attacker strikes a memorial site dedicated to the fight against fascism in the 20th century, thereby repeating the crimes of the 21st century," Tetiana Berezhna writes on Facebook, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
