Two seasons in a row, Norwegian Erling Braut Haaland has won the top scorer title in the Premier League, and he is certainly eager for the same honor this year.
Then, both he and his Manchester City got a perfect start to the season. Already after 18 minutes, Haaland's 1-0 goal came from close range.
Chelsea had a ball in the net just before the break, but the equalizing goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
In the final minutes of the match, City instead made it 2-0, as Mateo Kovacic pulled off a shot from outside the penalty area that found its way in via the post. The former Chelsea player then chose not to celebrate his goal.
Much of the talk surrounding Manchester City ahead of this season has otherwise been about something other than what happens on the football pitch.
An investigation revealed in February 2023 that City had breached the English league's regulations on 115 points during the period 2009-2018 – a period during which they won the Premier League three times. The club denies any wrongdoing and a hearing is expected to begin in mid-September.
Another match was decided on Sunday. There, Brentford won at home against Crystal Palace with 2-1.
