Manchester City won the Premier League last season and Manchester United won the FA Cup after a final victory over City. Thus, the two reigning champions met in the Community Shield at Wembley.

The match offered plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. Both City's James McAtee and United's Marcus Rashford had shots that hit the post. Moreover, United captain Bruno Fernandes had a dream goal disallowed for offside.

In the final stages of the match, things heated up thanks to two substitutes.

First: Alejandro Garnacho – newly crowned South American champion with Argentina – scored 1–0 for United with eight minutes remaining.

Then: Bernardo Silva reached highest on a cross and headed in 1–1 for City with one minute left.

The match therefore went to a penalty shootout, where both City's Bernardo Silva and United's Jadon Sancho saw their penalties saved. When United's Jonny Evans then shot his penalty high over, Manuel Akanji could decide for City.

The penalty shootout ended 7–6 in favor of City, which thereby won the season's first trophy.
