Participation in the church election is expected to be around 19 percent when all votes are counted, which would be a small increase. Extremely gratifying, says the Secretary General of the Church of Sweden.

The final result will be clear in about four weeks. The preliminary voter turnout is 17.84 percent, but not all advance votes have been counted.

We are also receiving signals that more and more people are choosing to vote in advance, so our assessment is that it is closer to 19 percent of our members who have chosen to go and vote, says Camilla Asp, Secretary-General of the Church of Sweden.

In 2021, 18.39 percent of those eligible to vote participated.

We must continue to work to make the church election more visible and get more people to go and vote, says church election leader Nils Warmland.

Green winds

According to the preliminary figures, the nominating groups The Greens in the Church of Sweden and Heaven and Earth have been the most successful.

So, there have been green winds, says Nils Warmland.

The Free Liberals in the Church of Sweden and the nominating group Open Church – a church for all have also made progress.

New threshold

Alternative for Sweden (AfS) has received more votes than in 2021, but loses all its three seats in the church council due to the introduction of a new two-percent threshold.

The Center Party has backed down significantly and appears to go from 30 to 23 seats. The Sweden Democrats in the Church of Sweden are also declining, as is the nominating group Bourgeois Christian Cooperation, which is a merger of the Christian Democrats in the Church of Sweden and the Bourgeois Alternative.

The Left in the Church of Sweden is also losing seats.

The largest nominating groups are still the Social Democrats (S) and the Non-partisan in the Church of Sweden.

This is how the seats are distributed in the church assembly when 2,083 of 2,085 electoral districts have been counted. Seats after the 2021 church election in parentheses.

Social Democrats (S): 72 (70)

Non-partisan in the Church of Sweden (POSK): 45 (47)
