Christian Fischer – who has played a total of nine seasons and over 500 matches in NHL – chooses to quit. The reason is that he lacks the joy to continue.

During the past years I have looked at my life and thought about what makes me happy; to be close to my family and my life in Scottsdale, he says in an interview with The Athletic. This is a decision that is about starting a new chapter in life.

The American forward, who last year played 45 matches with Detroit, chooses to focus on a civilian career in the golf world.

If you had told me as a ten-year-old that I would play 500 matches in NHL I would have been the world's happiest kid, he says.
