Christian Democrat Leader Urges Tougher Laws on Extremist Demonstrations

The Christian Democrats' leading figure in the European Parliament, Alice Teodorescu Måwe, believes that the Left Party's Lorena Delgado Varas should be punished following the criticized posts on social media. She also questions why the police do not apprehend what she calls "left-wing Nazis" during Palestine demonstrations in Sweden.

Teodorescu Måwe has written an open letter to the National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh, where she questions what she calls the police's passivity in Palestinian demonstrations.

How can it be that no one is arrested or prosecuted for the anti-Semitism that is expressed in the recurring demonstrations in Sweden?

She writes in the letter, published in Aftonbladet: "If necessary, it is up to the legislator to immediately further tighten the law to get to grips with the left-wing extremists and Islamists who are polluting our streets."

Opens up for legislative change

As an example of what would be punishable, she mentions statements such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".

We have pure tributes to the terrorist leader Sinwar who was killed. We have that people are shooting fireworks, we have that people were out in caravans and celebrated the worst pogrom against Jews since the Holocaust. It is a celebration of terror.

It is deeply problematic that no one is convicted, in Sweden and at the EU level.

She opens up for changing both the hate crime legislation and the freedom of speech act, despite not sitting in the Riksdag. On the question of whether it is the Christian Democrats who are behind a possible such proposal, she answers that the party is against all forms of anti-Semitism.

Is Lorena Delgado Varas' social media post punishable?

I absolutely think so. What the prosecutor said was that it was an anti-Semitic image, but one could not confirm intent. And I think it is a very dangerous reasoning.

"Investigated and dropped"

The Left Party's EU parliamentarian Jonas Sjöstedt says that the party colleague's post, where an Israeli hand is seen controlling the USA and, by extension, Ukraine, was anti-Semitic and inappropriate but that it was investigated and the case was dropped.

It is the legal system that decides, we have not proposed any legislative change. I think Alice Teodorescu Måwe is an example of a politician who in practice repeats the Israeli government's excuses and talking points.

I think it is remarkable that Swedish politicians in practice defend genocide and ethnic cleansing.
