Military personnel from Australia and New Zealand are monitoring three Chinese warships that have traveled unusually far south and are located near the Australian east coast.
A week ago, the Australian government announced that the ships had passed through Southeast Asia and the Coral Sea and were approaching northeastern Australia. On Thursday, Defense Minister Richard Marles reported that the Chinese ships are located off the country's east coast.
The military's ships and aircraft are monitoring the Chinese ships' journey through international waters.
They have the right to be where they are. Australia also has the right to be cautious and we are monitoring very closely, says Marles.
