Electric and hybrid cars, which can run on electricity or fossil fuels, accounted for 43 percent of new registrations in September, up from 32 percent a year earlier.
Subsidies for electric car purchases in France and Germany are contributing to the trend, as are high fuel prices resulting from the war in the Middle East.
Chinese car brands such as Chery have more than doubled their share of new car registrations so far this year, with a boost in September, according to Bloomberg.
Tesla registrations also took off in September.
