There were shifts in the messages conveyed after a telephone conversation between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Xi urged the U.S. to be "cautious" about arms sales to Taiwan, state-run Chinese media outlet CCTV reported:

The Taiwan issue is the most important in the relationship between the United States and China, Xi said.

Trump said the conversation had been "excellent" and that topics related to trade and the military had been discussed.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the situation in Iran and issues related to oil and gas trade, were also raised in Wednesday's talks.

"The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is extremely good," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump is traveling to China in April to meet with Xi, who is expected to visit the United States this fall.
