China’s Third-Quarter Growth Beats Forecasts as Consumer Spending Rises

China's growth accelerated slightly more than expected in the third quarter, according to the country's statistics bureau. GDP grew by 4.5 percent compared with the same period last year, up from 4.3 percent in the second quarter and above analysts' average forecast of 4.4 percent.

The boost came from increased domestic consumption. Retail sales rose by 1.1 percent year on year in September, up from 0.4 percent in August. The average forecast was for an increase of 0.5 percent.

Excluding car sales, retail sales rose by 3.9 percent in September, the fastest increase since October 2025.

Industrial production rose by 5.5 percent in September, in line with expectations. However, fixed-asset investment continued to decline, falling 7.2 percent in the first nine months of the year.
