Chinese warships are withdrawing from the waters around Taiwan after extensive military exercises in recent days. China says the exercises have ended.

China has flown at least 130 fighter jets around Taiwan, and dozens of warships have navigated the waters off the self-governing island.

China's army and the rocket forces that handle the country's ballistic and cruise missiles participated in the exercise that began on Monday.

China announced on Wednesday that it had "successfully completed" the exercise, which reportedly included live-ammunition training and aimed to simulate a blockade of ports and attacks on maritime targets.

According to the statement, China's military will continue to exercise to "resolutely counter attempts" by, among others, Taiwan's "independence separatists" and external interference.
