China will restrict access to Nvidia's advanced H200 chips despite Donald Trump's decision to allow exports of the technology to China, the Financial Times reports.

According to two sources, regulators in Beijing have discussed ways to allow limited access to Nvidia's second-best AI chip, the H200.

According to the sources, potential buyers of the chip in China would have to submit applications for purchase and justify why Chinese chips cannot be used. A decision on such an approval process has not yet been finalised, the FT writes.

US President Donald Trump announced in a post on Truth Social on Monday that he had notified Chinese President Xi Jinping that the US would allow Nvidia to “deliver its H200 products to approved customers in China ... under conditions that allow for continued strong national security. President Xi responded positively!”
