China is considering whether to initiate talks with the USA on trade between the countries, announces the country's Trade Department in a release overnight to Friday.

According to the statement, Beijing has noted that representatives of the American government have made statements about being willing to discuss tariff policy with China.

"The USA has recently sent messages to China through adequate channels, hoping to initiate talks with China," the department further states.

The move comes after the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent described the situation with the high tariffs between the countries as unsustainable and that they therefore must be scaled down in an interview on Thursday.

Both Beijing and Washington received gloomy news on the economic front earlier in the week. On Wednesday, GDP figures showed that the American economy is slowing down. The next day, it became clear that the Chinese industry is losing pace, according to the purchasing managers' index.

Trump has introduced tariffs of 145% against China, which has responded with tariffs of 125%.
