The country's Ministry of Commerce has held meetings with leading domestic companies in the sector - such as Alibaba, Bytedance and Zhipu - on ways to limit Western acquisitions of advanced technology and start-ups.
Among other things, the ministry is said to have discussed a proposal to limit the transfer of data for developing Chinese AI models abroad.
The move comes after Chinese company Moonshot last week launched the AI model Kimi K3, which is said to outperform Anthropic's flagship Opus 4.8 by most measures.
