The launch took place from a nuclear-powered submarine and is described by the Chinese navy as successful. The missile is said to have the capacity to carry nuclear weapons, but during the test launch the warhead was a dummy.

A similar test launch was carried out in 2024, but this was the first time in four decades.

The Beijing regime had warned New Zealand, among others, about the test in advance, sources say. But several countries in the region are protesting the armament and the aggressive military signals.

"Australia has been clear in its opposition to China, which is seen as destabilizing the region," says Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
