The arsenal is described as a “new generation” of nuclear weapons. Multiple sources with insight into US intelligence assessments told CNN the goal is to transform the Chinese nuclear arsenal into the world’s most technologically advanced.
This will include weapons systems that can fire several smaller nuclear warheads from a single missile.
In recent years, China is reported to have secretly conducted at least one test and is said to be planning more, despite China committing to cease such activities in 1996.
The new initiative is believed to be able to bring China closer to the dominant nuclear powers, the United States and Russia, in terms of capacity.
