The conflict between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China has intensified in recent years, with clear markings from Beijing that Taiwan is part of China – not least through military presence around the island. The government in Taipei has in turn sharpened its tone towards China, and the US stands firm in its support for Taiwan.
President Donald Trump said, however, during the American election campaign that Taiwan does not do enough on its own to protect itself against Chinese aggression. Trump then floated the proposal that Taiwan should give replacement to US for protection.
