The system has already been used in northern Philippines, since the USA placed it there to be used in joint military exercises. Typhon has also previously been used by the Philippines, among other things, to practice defending its interests in the South China Sea, something China claims has exacerbated tensions in the area.
The conflict is focused on the important trade routes where China claims large parts of the South China Sea. China claims that the Philippines' move increases the risk of an arms race.
The introduction of the system is a provocative and dangerous move, says the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Mao Ning.
