Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday.
"We believe that a comprehensive ceasefire is urgently needed, and that renewed fighting is unacceptable," Wang told Araghchi, according to a video from the meeting.
Beijing has so far been relatively quiet about the war in Iran, but at Wednesday's meeting, Wang Yi sharpened his tone. According to the AFP news agency, China emphasizes that Iran has a "legitimate right" to "peaceful use of nuclear energy."
The US has often cited Iran's uranium enrichment as an important reason for the war - that is, that it wants to eliminate the risk of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump is traveling to China next week to meet with President Xi Jinping for talks.
