The US government with Donald Trump at the helm "significantly disrupts the global economic order", said the Chinese UN ambassador at an informal meeting in the UN Security Council, which dealt with the use of threats in international relations.

Should we follow international laws and the fundamental norms that govern international relations, or should we return to the jungle law where the strong prey on the weak? said Fu Cong in his speech.

He warned against what he called the "uncontrolled spread of unilateralism", and said that bullying methods thrive in the world and that coercion is not "the right way to engage with China".

The Washington envoy hit back and called Fu Cong's comments a show lacking credibility. According to him, it is China that has long applied unfair trade practices that have harmed the global economy.

The world should look at China's actions, rather than its empty words, when assessing its contribution to the international system, said Ting Wu, deputy political adviser for the US in the UN.
