Police in Belgium and Portugal have struck against around 20 locations early on Thursday to investigate suspected corruption linked to the Chinese mobile giant Huawei.
According to the newspaper Le Soir, several lobbyists working for the company have been taken in for questioning, suspected of having corrupted current or former EU parliamentarians.
Among other things, free phones, football tickets to top team Anderlecht's matches and money transfers of "thousands of euros" are said to have been used in this context.
"The corruption has been going on regularly and discreetly from 2021 to now", Belgian investigators tell Le Soir.
Around 15 politicians are said to be involved in the investigation, according to the newspaper, without any names being mentioned yet.
