Guzmán is seen as one of South America's foremost documentary filmmakers and often portrayed events from a left-wing political angle.
He is best known for his trilogy "The Battle of Chile" about President Salvador Allende, the coup against him in 1973, and life in Chile during dictator Augusto Pinochet's first years in power.
The films contain several now very famous images from the events surrounding the coup on September 11, 1973 - including those filmed by the Swedish-Argentine cameraman Leonardo Henrichsen, who was shot dead by the military.
Guzmán had lived in exile since 1973 but continued to portray Chile and Pinochet, achieving success with the films "Nostalgia for the Light" in 2010 and "The Pearl Button" in 2015.
Patricio Guzmán died in Paris after a period of illness, his wife told AFP.
