At least ten people have died and more than 1,100 homes have been destroyed in the normally dry areas of Coquimbo and Atacama in northern Chile.

In one hour, as much rain fell as normally falls in a month, says Deputy Interior Minister Máximo Pavez.

President José Antonio Kast declared a state of emergency on Monday to allow the military to help with rescue efforts. Several communities have been isolated after roads were washed away and blocked by floodwaters.
