Vera Herngren has created "Skilsmässobarn" together with Felicia Danielsson, and they also play two of the main roles in the series, which premieres on SVT Play on April 17.
Vera is the daughter of Felix Herngren, and his company FLX also produced the new series, which has led some to compare "Divorce Children" with "Bonus Family," which he helped create.
"I would say it touches on some of the same themes, but it's really a completely different family," she says.
Everyday drama
The tone and focus on recognizable everyday drama are the same.
"It's like 'Bonus Family' 2.0," says Gustaf Hammarsten.
He plays father Henrik, a successful architect who has started a new family. The four full and half-siblings have a knack for, more or less unconsciously, irritating each other or creating conflicts in the family.
Vera Herngren and Felicia Danielsson previously created the TV series "Likea" (C More/TV4) and "Leva life" (Viaplay) together, and came up with the idea for "Divorce Children" when they realized that most of their friends had parents who had separated.
"Above all, we found it so exciting that this is not about a divorce but about what a divorce brings with it over time. It's fun to explore how the adult children carry it with them in their own relationships," explains Felicia Danielsson.
Changed times
Gustaf Hammarsten, who grew up in the 1970s, notices that times have changed when it comes to how families handle divorces.
"If people got divorced, they could move to another city! If it's a good divorce, they still try to live in the same neighborhood. It's getting more and more complicated, in both good and complicated ways," he says.
Vera Herngren and Felicia Danielsson are also children of divorce in real life and have used their own experiences in the script. They know how small things can easily escalate into jealousy when a parent starts a new family.
"My dad has never liked animals, but then my youngest sister got a cat and he cares a lot about that cat. It can be little things like that that create some strange, strong feeling in you," says Felicia Danielsson, and adds:
"But you don't have to be so offended. It's really cool that he likes a cat."
