Child Dies of Measles in New York, First Such Death in 30 Years

A child in New York has died after contracting measles, according to local authorities. It is the first such death in 30 years.

“It is with great sadness that I hear this news,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

Following a measles outbreak in New York and neighboring states, Democrat Hochul declared a state of emergency in October.

The United States has suffered its worst measles outbreak in 35 years. The infection has been found in 47 of the country’s 50 states, and more than 4,800 cases have been reported, according to the CDC.

According to the CDC, more than twice as many people in the United States have been infected with measles this year as last year.

Ninety-six percent of those infected were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status.
