The funeral for former US Secretary of Defense and Vice President Dick Cheney was held on Thursday in Washington, D.C. Neither President Donald Trump nor Vice President JD Vance were invited. However, former President Joe Biden was in attendance.

Other guests included former President George W Bush and former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris and Mike Pence.

Dick Cheney, who was 84 years old, passed away on November 3 from complications resulting from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease.

The hardline Republican was vice president from 2001 to 2009 under President George W Bush, and before that, secretary of defense under his father George HW Bush.

Cheney took office as vice president shortly before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and became one of the masterminds behind the disastrous and criticized Iraq War. In his final years, he became increasingly ostracized from his party because of his criticism of Donald Trump as a threat to democracy.

For him, a choice between defending the Constitution and defending his political party was no choice at all, said his daughter and former congresswoman Liz Cheney in her memorial speech at the church.
