In the 75th minute, David Turnbull set Cardiff City Stadium ablaze. The 26-year-old Scot met Perry Ng's cross with a perfect header to make it 1-1 against Premier League fourth-placed Chelsea.
After that, it was open-ended because there is no extra time in the League Cup quarter-finals – in the event of a draw, penalties apply.
Both teams wanted to decide and then Cardiff, who are at the top of the English third division, drew the shortest straw.
Andrey Santos rolled the ball out to Pedro Neto in the 81st minute, and the Portuguese masterfully drilled home a 2-1 goal for Chelsea into the far corner. Alejandro Garnacho, who also scored 1-0, then punctuated the match with his 3-1 goal in added time.
The quarter-finals continue with Manchester City–Brentford and Newcastle–Fulham on Wednesday. The final quarter-final, Arsenal–Crystal Palace, will be played the day before Christmas Eve.
