The school's chef discovered a dead snake in the school food, but still decided to serve lunch to the children in the state school. Now, about a hundred children in the village of Mokama in northeastern India have fallen ill and the country's human rights commission is demanding that the police take action.
The incident has also led to strong protests among parents.
"The news that the children fell ill after eating the lunch led to protesting villagers blocking the street", writes the commission.
The commission is now demanding "a detailed report" from the state representatives and the police, which should also include the children's condition.
It is not clear what type of snake it was, or what kind of poisoning it could be about.
