Behind the nomination is the far-right group ESN, which is dominated mainly by the German AFD.
Other nominees include, among others, a combination of journalists and aid workers in Palestine, the organizers of Budapest Pride and political activists from Algeria, Georgia and Serbia.
The pre-favorite is the imprisoned Polish-Belarusian journalist and human rights activist Andrzej Poczobut, who has been nominated by EPP and ECR – the right-wing groups where M, KD and SD are members.
Who will receive the award will be decided by Speaker Roberta Metsola and the group leaders of the party groups in October.
