British journalist and author Charles Spencer writes in a new book that then Prince Charles seemed "drunk with happiness" the night his wife, Princess Diana, died in a car accident 29 years ago.

Spencer also claims in the book that after the princess's death, Charles told him:

“Don’t worry, we’ll forget about her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace denied the allegations on Thursday.

His Majesty is aware that the pain of a brother's grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways that others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss, said a palace spokesman.

The book, which will be released next week, will be published in serial form in the tabloid Daily Mail.
