On June 13, 2023, a boat sank in the Mediterranean with over 750 migrants and refugees on board. Only 104 people survived. Now, 17 employees of the Greek coast guard are being prosecuted.

The indictment comes from human rights groups' advocates, following what is described as the deadliest accident in the Mediterranean in modern times.

Among them is the captain of the coastguard boat that patrolled the area during the incident. He has failed to provide assistance and has put others at risk, according to the indictment.

Also, the former head of the coastguard, a supervisor at the main rescue centre in Greece, and several people who were on duty on 13 June 2023, are indicted.
