Chaos erupted when the lower house of Brazil's parliament was set to vote on a bill to reduce penalties for a number of serious crimes - which could mean that former President Jair Bolsonaro receives a significantly shorter prison sentence.

A left-wing politician was taken out by police after trying to disrupt the proceedings. He took possession of the speaker's chair, among other things. The meeting was able to resume after the unrest.

After Bolsonaro's political allies failed to secure an amnesty, steps have been taken to "reduce the sentence," lawmaker Sostenes Cavalcante admitted. The former president was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for his coup attempt after the 2022 election.

If the bill is approved, Bolsonaro's sentence is expected to be reduced to two years and four months. In addition, around 100 of Bolsonaro's convicted supporters will be released on parole.

If there is a yes vote in the lower house, the Senate will later also have its say.

During the night, Swedish time, it has also emerged that Bolsonaro's defense attorneys have asked the Supreme Court to allow him to be temporarily released to undergo surgery due to his deteriorating health, according to documents seen by AFP.
