Champions League Guide: PSG chase third straight title as new season begins

Premier League matches, Tuesday: Club Brugge-Aston Villa, AEK Athens-LASK (both 6:45 p.m.), Real Madrid-Inter, Dortmund-Villarreal, Porto-Manchester City, Lille-Real Betis (all 9:00 p.m.).

Wednesday: Barcelona-Feyenoord, Stuttgart-Viking (both 6:45 p.m.), Paris SG-Slovan Bratislava, Liverpool-Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon-Galatasaray, Napoli-Arsenal (all 9:00 p.m.).

Thursday: PSV Eindhoven-Shakhtar Donetsk, Fenerbahce-Roma (both 6:45 p.m.), Bayern Munich-Bodø/Glimt, Manchester United-Sabah, Slavia Prague-Lens, Como-Leipzig (all 9:00 p.m.).

How the Champions League works: The league phase is a group stage with 36 teams, where each team faces eight different opponents. The eight best clubs qualify directly for the round of 16, while the teams placed 9-24 meet in the round of 16.

Norwegian success: Last year, Bodø/Glimt had a strong season, reaching the round of 16, where Sporting Lisbon needed extra time to advance. Bodø/Glimt are back this season and are joined by Viking. This is the first time since 1999 that two Norwegian teams have participated in the main tournament.

The favorites: Champions League team Paris SG is the bookmakers' favourite for the season. Shortly after, a series of big clubs follow: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool.

The debutants: Four clubs make their first CL appearance; Como, Italy, Lask, Austria, Sabah, Azerbaijan, Viking, Norway.

The final: June 5 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain.
