Grospiron's departure is the latest in a series of high-profile departures from the organising committee for the next Winter Olympics. Earlier this winter, the games' CEO Cyril Linette and chief operating officer Anne Murac also resigned.

57-year-old Grospiron won Olympic gold in moguls in 1992 and has been chairman for 18 months.

"After several months of internal conflict within the organising committee, I have concluded that the conditions for continuing this project do not exist," Edgar Grospiron writes in a statement.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 1-17, 2030.
