Tributes to director Rob Reiner are pouring in on social media, while celebrities and politicians alike are furious at Donald Trump's claims that Reiner, a staunch Democrat, was murdered for his criticism of the president.

Hollywood stars are expressing sadness and dismay over the sudden deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner.

President Donald Trump has also commented on the death on his Truth social platform, beginning by lamenting the passing of a “tortured and struggling, but once very talented film director and comedy star.” He then suggests that Reiner died because of the anger he caused others through his massive opposition to Trump.

The comments are met with condemnation and are described as "horrible and sick".

"What a disgusting and disgusting statement," writes "White Lotus" actor Patrick Schwarzenegger on X.

"This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies," Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, now an outspoken Trump critic, writes on X .

Actor and presenter Whoopi Goldberg also condemns Trump's statement and describes Reiner as her friend and "an absolutely fantastic man."

But Trump stands his ground. At a press conference at the White House, he answers a question about the criticism and says that Reiner “went insane” by his opposition to Trump.

I wasn't a fan of him at all, in any way. He was bad for our country.
