This comes after the 58-year-old Slovenian received support from all 55 member associations and is therefore standing for re-election next year, UEFA announced on its website.

"I would like to thank the national associations for their trust. We have faced extraordinary challenges in recent years and have handled them as a team. There is important work to be done and that is why I have accepted their call," Ceferin said in a statement.

He has been UEFA president since 2016, when his predecessor Michel Platini was fired. The following year, it was decided that a president could serve only three terms, a total of 12 years. But in 2024, UEFA approved a criticised proposal that people elected to UEFA’s leadership before the 2017 statute change should not be subject to the 12-year term limit.

This led, among other things, to former star player Zvonimir Boban resigning as UEFA’s head of football in protest against the proposal, which he believed Ceferin was pushing through out of self-interest.

However, just an hour after Congress voted through the proposal, Ceferin announced that he did not intend to stand for re-election in 2027.

"I decided six months ago that I will not run again. Basically, all organizations need new blood after a while," Ceferin said, among other things.

Now, however, he has changed his mind - and could remain in office until 2031.
