1,300 people have testified that they were abused as minors by priests and laypeople in the church. The Archdiocese of New York is now offering a settlement that means each plaintiff will receive at least $250,000 - equivalent to about 2.3 million kronor - for a total of $800 million.
The lawyers have urged their clients to accept the settlement and warn that the archdiocese may otherwise file for bankruptcy, according to a letter obtained by The New York Times.
Attorney Jeff Andersson, who represents the victims, says the proposed settlement is a “triumph” for the survivors “who have endured so much for so long.”
