Jim brings together melancholy, joy, style and unpretentiousness in a way that no other director does, Blanchett tells TT via Zoom.
"Father Mother Sister Brother", which was awarded the Venice Film Festival's highest prize, the Golden Lion, last fall, consists of three stories.
In the first, a pair of siblings visit their father, who lives in an isolated house. In the second, two sisters make their annual visit to their single mother. And in the third, a pair of siblings sit in an apartment and go through the estate of their deceased parents.
Uncomfortable feelings
Blanchett and Vicky Krieps play the sisters in the second story, which is full of uncomfortable emotions. Charlotte Rampling plays their mother.
Cate Blanchett emphasizes that all families are unique - but that there are also many similarities.
"Before I had children myself, I didn't realize how much your relationship with your siblings affects how your personality develops. There is a dynamic between siblings," she says.
"And although I am fascinated by the relationship between sisters, it was important not to base it on my own experiences. I am very close to my sister, but it was important to keep track of what happened between Vicky, Charlotte and me."
"My own fault"
Story number one takes place in the United States, number two in Ireland, and number three in Paris. Blanchett says she used her time in Ireland to go winter swimming.
"My life consists of barely controlled chaos. I am pulled in different directions. Sometimes it is my own fault. I don't blame anyone, I do way too much and not always well. And when I am in the cold water, it is so cold that it is just where you are."
In the icy water, you can't plan ahead or dwell on what happened yesterday, she explains.
"Regrets, hopes, and dreams disappear. And I love those ten minutes every day. It's a gift. I go to bed late, I get up early. It's dark and I'm in the water and the birds start singing. It's amazing."
